The town is mainly a small part of Harris County chambers of the county. From the 2000 U.S. Census, Baytown's total population was 66,430 (although the 2004 estimate placed the city's population 67,321) is the fourth largest city and the surrounding metropolitan area.

Ala, Baytown began to be settled as soon as 1822. One of its earliest residents was Nathaniel Lynch, who create a ferry crossing at the junction of the San Jacinto River and Buffalo BAYOU. The ferry service, which he started is still in operation today, now known as the Lynchburg Ferry. Other early residents of Baytown include William Scott, one of Stephen F. Austin 's Old Three hundred and Ashbel Smith plantation owners in the area.

The city now known as Baytown was originally three separate towns. The first of these was the Goose Creek (which was probably one of the most well-known Bay City, and whose name has not yet reflected in the Goose Creek Consolidated Independent School District), which dates from before 1850. This was followed by competing communities in the late 1910s Pelly, and Baytown East in the early 1920. (So-called 'East' East Baytown later dropped because it was west of Goose Creek.) Appendix A serious talk about the three cities began immediately after World War I, but the Baytown adopted this idea. However, in 1947, brought together at the end of the three cities. Billed in the name of Citizens Baytown for the new combined city. Baytown, since it is known today, was established officially on January 24 1948.

In 1916, the Humble Oil & Refining Company, founded by one-time Texas Governor Ross S. Sterling and his associates, built the first offshore drilling operation in Texas (the second in the U.S.). The company later built the Baytown Refinery, which would become one of the world's largest at the time. Since then, many other refineries have been built in the region. Exxon-Mobil is still one of the largest employers in Baytown, and now has more than 10 area of plant.

Another important industry in Baytown began in 1970, when United States Steel, opened the Texas Works near the town. The plant later closed in July 1986 due to the poor economic climate and the decline in American steel, 1980.
